Intricate Hand-Cut Swirling Floor Design Pays Homage to Brighton High School’s Original Campus
Located near the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains about ten miles south of Salt Lake City, Brighton High School, in Cottonwoods Heights, Utah recently unveiled a whole new campus after years of planning and hard work.
The school serves a well-established suburban area, with a student body of 2,100 comprising grades 9-12. Originally opened in 1969, the campus was designed with two circular sections housing self-contained classrooms and a full auditorium. A gymnasium and support areas, along with a 20,000 sq. ft outbuilding, complete the campus, which is situated on the brow of a hill.
“Brighton High School embarked a full rebuild beginning in 2018,” shares Tom Sherwood, principal, Brighton High School, “Our former campus was over 50 years old and needed significant repairs.
We were hoping to create a student friendly campus that took better advantage of our amazing views, provided more natural light for students, and was technologically and structurally updated to 2022 standards.”
“The brilliant colors and thoughtful designs were very intentional,” says Sherwood, “The circular patterns are a homage to our original campus which was built as a round building with circular hallways. We were also able to integrate the Bengal theme and our school colors.”
What makes this project stand out and the install exceedingly impressive is that the flooring was hand-cut on-site by the contractor, Wall 2 Wall Flooring. Executing the intricately swirling design by hand is no small feat. The craftsmanship in this job is heavily recognized and touted.
“Most floors do not typically have a lot of rounded corners, complex designs and vibrant colors,” says Sherwood.
Apart from design, when it comes to flooring selection Sherwood states, “The primary concerns are durability, ease of cleaning, and aesthetics.”
He continues, “The students and teachers love the new spaces and have made several comments about the floor designs. The patrons and parents have also made comments about the spaces and how bright and inviting the new spaces are.”
