Surfs up! at the Outtakes Restaurant in Norfolk, VA thanks to an inspirational renovation by RRMM Architects.
The restaurant is part of Nauticus, a contemporary maritime museum on the Norfolk harbor with hands-on exhibits such as the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest battleships built by the U.S. Navy. In keeping with the nautical theme, designer Charlotte Hunt used Armstrong® DecorArt Rejuvenations Timberline Luxury Flooring and Translations flooring to incorporate intricate wave and surfboard patterns into the flooring.
“I used Timberline for the wave design because I wanted a hardwood look without the maintenance and expense,” she said. “Armstrong’s many colors, designs, and matching weld rod options allowed for a seamless design with endless possibilities.”
The nautical theme continues throughout the restaurant with colored wave patterns on the windows in the entrance and multicolored panels in surfboard designs suspended from a black ceiling. “Repeating the wave and surfboard design from the floor to the ceiling using different materials in a variety of forms created an inviting atmosphere with an engaging energy the museum was looking for,” according to Hunt.
