Bio-Flooring Pairs Sustainability and Style for a Stronger Product

Armstrong Flooring has been committed to sustainability throughout its history; holding steadfast to delivering solutions that reduce the environmental impact of the products they create, from design and raw material selection to how their products are produced and delivered. With this in mind, the Armstrong Commercial Flooring business continues to build upon their tradition of sustainable design practices by developing green flooring options that are both beautiful and more environmentally friendly. In response to increased market demand for non-PVC flooring products, Armstrong Flooring created the BBT Bio-flooring product line.

Made with 85% limestone and BioStride®, a patented bio-based polyester binder, BBT Bio-flooring is a prime example of the Armstrong Flooring strength to innovate and adapt in the face of change. As you might imagine, developing BBT Bio-flooring was no easy feat, and took several years to create. What began as research into ways to reduce reliance on petroleum and fossil fuels, led Armstrong Flooring to explore rapidly renewable bio-based resources to create their flooring products. BioStride is the end product of this research.

Since it is partly comprised of rapidly renewable domestic corn and 40% recycled content, the impact on the environment as well as reliance on fossil fuels is reduced. In light of this, Armstrong Flooring sought to apply this technology where it would have the greatest impact. With over 1 billion square feet installed every year, composition tile was the perfect product for Armstrong Flooring to choose. In doing so, Armstrong Flooring was able to expand the availability and affordability of this sustainable bio-based technology to the largest product category in the hard surface industry. Once created, Armstrong Flooring conducted a full life cycle assessment of their products and found that BBT Bio-flooring has the lowest carbon footprint of all their resilient flooring products.

“With Armstrong BBT flooring, not only did we reduce the environmental impact but we also made a product that was stronger. A lot of times when people make “green products”, they take away some of the functionality, but we actually made a green product that’s two-and-a-half times the strength of our regular products,” said Amy Costello, Sustainability Manager. “Not only did we reduce its environmental footprint, but we made the product better.”

The use of the bio-based polyester binder along with a through-pattern construction throughout the thickness of the limestone-based tile is what makes it so strong. BBT Bio-Flooring has a greater resistance to impact and cracking than standard composition tile, providing a durable, long-lasting resilient flooring option for all commercial market segments. Even after years of foot and rolling load traffic, the performance and durability of the flooring is preserved.

Creating an environmentally friendly and durable product was only half the battle. The product also had to be visually appealing. In an effort to pair elegant organic visuals with essential environmental features, Armstrong quite fittingly drew inspiration from the natural qualities found in ancient stone and time-weathered wood. From this, the Striations BBT  Bio-flooring and Migrations BBT Bio-flooring collections were created.

With natural variegated striations in a sophisticated color palette, the Striations BBT Bio-flooring and Migrations BBT Bio-Flooring collections coordinate with the complete Armstrong Flooring portfolio of products for a seamless transition across product lines. The color compatibility of these collections opens the door for unlimited options to create dazzling flooring layouts and the elegant visuals customers want, with the environmental features customers need. This flexibility allows different industries to create an experience specific to their customer base while providing a positive atmosphere through design.

Migrations BBT Bio-flooring and Striations BBT  Bio-flooring, both PVC-free and plasticizer-free, are the result of the Armstrong Flooring ongoing commitment to develop products that reduce environmental impact while improving performance in use. The strong balance of function and design in the BBT  Bio-flooring product line ensures that Armstrong Flooring customers do not have to sacrifice aesthetics or quality to have eco-friendly flooring in their facilities. BBT Bio-flooring is also fitting for applications across all industries, especially education and retail features an affordable price point, and is easy to maintain.

One firm who required both eco-friendly and visually appealing flooring is the Phipps Conservatory Center for Sustainable Landscape. They selected Armstrong BBT Bio-flooring for their classroom. The Phipps Conservatory is the first building to achieve LEED Platinum, Well Building Platinum and Living Building Challenge™ certification, and features non-toxic materials, generates its own energy, and recycles water on site. It serves as a model of how classrooms of the future can be built to maximize student wellness and potential.
