The corridors at Kaiser Permanente’s Orchard Medical Office buildings were carpeted and showed wear from foot traffic. When it came time to renovate, patient and staff safety were top of mind for decision makers who also wanted floors that would be low maintenance and durable, as well as come in a variety of colors to coordinate with existing decor.

Janet Rhee, an associate and senior interior designer with DLR Group WWCOT Interiors, selected Armstrong® MARMORETTE and GRANETTE linoleum with NATURcote, a UV-cured coating. Since Armstrong linoleum is made from natural materials, it was a great flooring choice for decision makers at Kaiser Permanente who were looking looking for floors that were PVC-free. In addition, Armstrong linoleum offers superior performance that resists dirt, discoloration, scuffs and scratches.

Before the renovation, Orchard Medical Facility had long corridors with the same field carpet and white paint throughout. “It was a challenge for patients to find their way into exam rooms and back out to the waiting areas because everything looked the same,” said Rhee. “Our design approach was to coordinate flooring pattern and colors with paint colors to create a way-finding tool for patients.”

Having a wide range of colors to choose from was important said Rhee who was working to select shades and tones that coordinated with her client’s standard color palette. Both MARMORETTE and GRANETTE feature CONTINUUM™, a simple organized tonal step system that unites hue, value and chroma. This expanded and flexible range of color options offers fast and easy color selection.

“It was definitely helpful to have a wide range of colors available,” said Rhee. “Different accent colors were used to identify common areas such as the restrooms while other colors were used to create visual paths leading patients back to the waiting rooms from exam areas.”

Rhee said sustainability was another major consideration when selecting flooring options for Orchard Medical Facility especially in the pediatric unit where indoor air quality was important. Armstrong® linoleum is low VOC, third-party FloorScore™ certified and LEED® eligible.

Today, Orchard Medical Facility’s exam areas are soft and sophisticated while the pediatrics unit is bright and fun thanks to Armstrong linoleum. “It will definitely make a visit to the doctor’s office more fun and pleasant for young patients,” said Rhee.
