At Armstrong Flooring, protecting our planet is synonymous with good business and in no place is this commitment more obvious than in our Braeside, Australia sheet flooring plant. Since 1968, Armstrong Flooring has been making sustainable flooring products and contributing to the local economy. In 2007, when Armstrong Flooring first initiated our public commitments to reduce greenhouse gases, energy and water consumption, Braeside installed a rainwater harvesting and boiler reclamation system that reduced not only the potable water in the plant by 40 percent, but also the environmental burden associated with producing potable water. Water is also recirculated throughout the plant.
Braeside is striving to achieve a “Zero Net Waste” to landfill goal through a variety of efforts to reduce, recycle and reuse all scrap generated in their manufacturing process and to recycle associated materials such as pallets, paper, packaging and metal. As well, past efforts to reduce greenhouse gases have allowed Braeside to achieve The Greenhouse Gas Challenge.
The most exemplary sustainability practice at Braeside is the commitment and continuous focus on employee health and safety. In October 2017, Braeside celebrated five years without a Lost Time Injury. From generously hosting a Morning Tea fundraiser to raise money for the Cancer Council of Australia to coordinating a children’s book drive in conjunction with the United Way to assembling “buddy bags” for a national charity protecting children from violence, Braeside demonstrates its commitment to serving the local community.
The Armstrong Flooring Braeside plant is ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certified and all of the products produced are independently verified by NCS International to meet the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) best practice PVC guidelines. This means that products are made from responsible PVC, produced from a mercury-free process and finished products are phthalate-free. As well, Armstrong Flooring is Australia’s only manufacturer of commercial vinyl flooring to be awarded the Vinyl Council of Australia’s PVC Stewardship Excellence Award (www.floorcoveringweekly.com)
